About Smarter DC

Smarter DC aims to develop and promote smart city-aligned projects, partner organizations, and opportunities, across all eight wards by building relationships between government and community, providing leadership, and collaborating across programs and sectors

The Bowser Administration is leading an interagency effort to explore how emerging technologies and initiatives can be used in the District (and mitigating their risks and unintended consequences) in order to achieve a smarter, stronger and better quality of life for all District residents as well as drive economic opportunity and business development.

Smart city technology leverages intelligent city infrastructure, including connected devices, sensors, and data analytics to address city challenges. Smarter DC will provide a framework to help DC government and its partners responsibly deploy these connected devices and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies in a coordinated and consistent manner.

Background

This collaborative effort began in 2015 with partnerships between city agencies, the federal government, universities, business improvement districts (BIDs), the tech community, advisory neighborhood commissions (ANCs) and other District stakeholders working together to:

  1. Align technology innovation with citizen inclusion, digitally enhanced services, more efficient city operations, and improved quality of life.

  2. Create a common strategy across the District agencies, other government entities, academia/research communities, industry partners, and other stakeholders to harmonize current activities and drive participation and progress.

  3. Develop a District-wide smart city framework, develop and share best practices, and take an outcomes based approach that aligns with Mayoral priorities and city challenges.

  4. Inspire an environment of collaboration, cooperation, and shared opportunities that maximizes investments and drives efficient use of District infrastructure and resources.
